Anonymous asked: I am confused, is there two different lyrics to the elephant song? Or is one an early version, or one is not real? Or does it just have a dif name like This Life and Trying your Luck?

As far as I’m aware, unless I’m having a brain fart, there is only one version of Elephant Song, and therefore one set of lyrics. And no, they aren’t published anywhere, but anyone can have a stab at deciphering them.

Anonymous asked: do you know why there aren't lyrics in the booklet of fioe for electricityscape, killing lies and fear of sleep?

But there are though…

Anonymous asked: For Meet Me In The Bathroom, at the end does it say folks in lust or fucks in lust? Also I read somewhere that the song is supposedly directed at Courtney Love, is it true? I read over the lyrics and it seems like it, but I kinda hope its not..

The official lyrics are HERE as well as on the album insert for the CD and vinyl record, so it’s definitely “fucks in lust.”

And the whole Courtney Love thing is a rumor—no one will ever know, of course, but she did write that song with his name in the title, but I think it was mostly tongue-in-cheek.

CORRECT IS THIS IT LYRICS

The Is This It lyrics on the official website have been incorrect in several places since the website redesign a year ago. Here are what the lyrics used to be published as on the old website, copied exactly down to the punctuation and line breaks, which I take as official.

Anonymous asked: i had to borrow all my strokes albums from my friend but she moved away and i've never had a chance to read the album booklets because my mom wont buy them for me online and i don't have my own banking card, would it be possible if you could post the correct lyrics in a tab on your page or something? :D

They’re already there in the “links” link on the left hand side of the page, third bulletpoint down—they link to the official ones on the website. Most of the corrections to erroneous ITI lyrics on the official website can be found under the lyrics tag on this blog.

Anonymous asked: Hi guys! I just noticed something in the lyrics of one of my favourite song of The Strokes, Vision Of Division. When Jules sing "I am not you, we could have, I'm almost through, great success, It's about time, such a success, That you came through, at no expense", is like 2 different person who's talking! Like if guy A say "I am not you, I'm almost through, it's about time that you came through" and guy B say "We could have great success, such a success at no expense"! I'm i right? cheers, Mat

That’s one of the reasons that’s one of my all-time favorite Strokes songs! It actually took me like two years to figure that out as well, because I didn’t have the proper lyrics to the album until like 2008, haha.

PS: Sorry the blog has been slow lately, guys: I have a lot going on at work but on Sunday I plan to post more videos and spice things up!

Anonymous asked: the lyrics evening sun by the strokes is it "in the evening sun. in the evening sun" because i'm pretty sure i hear him say "in the evening sun, amber evening sun" that's what it says online but in the lyric book with the cd is says 'in the evening sun, in the evening sun'.

Always go with what the booklet says—the online ones are terrible, even on the official site. That makes it hard for ITI and Angles, but really stick by the booklet for ROF and FIOE.

Anonymous asked: which one is right after the "I've been saying a billion times, and I'll say it again" ? "So long, my end, the sorry embrace" our "So long, my adversary and friend"

Official lyrics for Under Cover Of Darkness haven’t been released, but I feel confident in saying it’s definitely “so long my adversary and friend.”

Most people think it’s “my ex,” yeah, but the original lyrics on the website always had it as “Maya,” so that’s what I choose to believe the right lyrics are. The current website has it as “my ex,” however, but a lot of the ITI lyrics are screwed up there, so I don’t think they’re trustworthy at all.
As for who Maya is—no idea. On ITI, there’s a Maya, a Lisa, and a Nina, and no one knows who any of them are. I think they could have been friends or exes, but I think it’s more likely that they’re just made-up names, applying to real people or made-up ones.

Anonymous asked: were can i find the lyrics to Someday? Their's different versions everywhere and I really want to know the official ones.

Official ones according to the current website are here. However, the ITI lyrics on the CURRENT official site are not to be fully trusted, as they differ from the ITI lyrics they had up on the official site for years prior. This is what they USED to be:

In many ways, they’ll miss the good old days
Someday, someday
Yeah it hurts to say, but I want you to stay
Sometimes, sometimes
When we was young, oh man did we have fun
Always, always
Promises, they break before they’re made
Sometimes, sometimes

Oh, Maya says I’m lacking in depth.
I will do my best.
You say you want to stay by my side
Darling your head’s not right
See, alone we stand, together we fall apart
Yeah, I think I’ll be all right
I’m working so I wont have to try so hard
Tables they turn sometimes.

Oh, someday
No, I ain’t wasting no more time.

Trying, trying

And now my fears, they come to me in threes
So I,
Sometimes
Say: “Fate, my friend,
You say the strangest things
I find, sometimes.”

Oh, Maya says I’m lacking in depth
Shit, I will try my best
You say you want to stay by my side
Darling ,your head’s not right
See, alone we stand, together we fall apart
Yeah. I think I’ll be all right
I’m working so I wont have to try so hard
Tables they turn sometimes
Oh someday
I ain’t wasting no more time.

I trust the old official versions, personally.

Anonymous asked: Who do you think the lyrics "I know you hate to be impressed with someone else, other than yourself / But you know trying to hold back on being an asshole helps" are directed at?

Honestly, I have no idea, that’s a question for Julian! I think a lot of his lyrics are most definitely personal in nature, but without knowing him and what his life was like at the time of writing that particular song, even down to what that particular day was like, I don’t think anyone can say but him.

I love that line, though, it’s one of my favorites.

Anonymous asked: are the lyrics of "heart in a cage" all correct in the official website?

Yes, those are correct. The lyrics for ROF and FIOE are much more consistent because the lyrics are included in the album liner notes and there’s much less room for people to remember them incorrectly to put on a new version of the website or something like that. ITI, I’m not sure what their deal is, but there are a few glaring errors that make me wince. And of course, we only have a few official lyrics sheets from Angles, which can all be found under the LYRICS tag.

youdonthavetobesmartallofthetim asked: In "Hard to Explain," what are the correct lyrics after "Oh man, can't you see..." On one website, it says "I'm nervous, so please..." and on another it says "I'm ever so pleased..." It's bugging me!! I have to know!! :)

The official website really can’t be trusted for reliable lyrics on ITI anymore, unfortunately. I take the ITI lyrics that were on the FORMER website to be the correct ones, and according to that, it’s “ever so pleased.” I think whoever did them for the newest website just got them off MetroLyrics or something.

pablomontero asked: I was looking at your favourite lyrics and I saw you liked When It Started's "Come on tell me.." and I would just like to point out that it's actually "does SHE warm the room when he comes..." but it doesn't matter because I sing it just like you! It just sounds so much better that way, plus it has more emotional value. Cheers, love the blog. xx

I actually can’t remember if the website had it as “he” or “she” originally, but the lyrics I have were taken directly from the old site so I’m inclined to believe it’s “he” even though I’ve seen several people say otherwise. I’m going to leave it as is for now, but thanks for pointing it out :)

Also, this is a good opportunity to mention that on the pre-Angles website, the lyrics to that song (and a few other lines from others on Is This It) were written differently. Now they’re trying to tell us that the end of “When It Started” goes like this:

Come on tell me does she wander
Roam when he comes
Or does he just know
How to leave when it gets cold

BLASPHEMY, I say.
